Scanning Tags in "Alan Wake" reveals key clues.

Since Microsoft’s “Alan Wake” Xbox 360 title hit stores in mid-May, gaming enthusiasts have dedicated a lot of time trying to figure out what the crazy-looking codes are throughout the haunting episodes of this dream-mare.

After a few days, players learned that these coded signs were Microsoft Tags. Players can “decipher” the codes by scanning them with their smartphones, which triggers their phones to call a number with a voicemail from one of the characters in the game (nice use of the Dialer Tag). Other in-game Tags take players to a Verizon-sponsored mobile site with exclusive “Alan Wake” themes and extras.

“Alan Wake” is the first game title to incorporate Tags. Integrating Tag technology into game play is a creative, engaging way to take gamers from the virtual gaming world back in the real world, without interrupting their game experience. Much like “Alan Wake” itself, Tags allow the story to continue beyond the players’ expectations.
