Mobile tagging is increasingly popular in the smartphone-happy Middle East.

More than 90 percent of Turkey’s population has mobile phones, so when Volvo’s ad agency, Euro RSCG 4D, developed its recent in-country advertisements for the Swedish auto manufacturer, it turned to mobile marketing and Microsoft Tag.

The ads, which ran in four major Turkish newspapers (Hürriyet, Milliyet, Sabah, Habertürk) included a custom Tag that took readers to a website with more details on Volvo’s cars, plus a lead-capture form for potential sales.

This is the second major use of Tag in Turkey. Last month, Turkish mobile-phone operator Turkcell announced MobilKod, a Tag-based service that enables marketers to reach millions of mobile subscribers in Turkey and beyond.

Mobile marketing is growing across the Middle East. A recent article on 2D barcodes in The National, the Abu Dhabi Media company's English-language publication, noted that the United Arab Emirates may have the highest mobile-phone penetration in the world, making mobile tagging an ideal advertising vehicle.

What do you think of the global growth of mobile tagging? Are there more ideas perfect for markets with such high mobile phone use? Let us know in the Comments below or on Tag’s Facebook or Twitter pages.
