Microsoft Tags on food packaging let you know what you're eating.

You may not think Microsoft Tag and food go together, but I bet I can change your mind. Tag can provide more information about the food you’re buying, and it can be a fun way to personalize a dessert or other treat.

Meyer Natural Beef is a great example – it uses Tag to share more details about its products than the packaging can provide. If you download the free Microsoft Tag app and scan the Tag on the meat wrapper, you’ll see a video showcasing the beef's natural origins.

This is a great way for food companies to relay information about their products to consumers concerned with what goes into their bodies. Personally, I’d love to see this go even farther to show the journey of the meat: where the cow was raised, what it was fed, where it was butchered, and how long it’s been at the supermarket.


Another great example: What if you want to give people ideas on preparing your product? Eurofood Italy is one of that country’s largest food importers and distributors, and wanted a new way to engage customers. So it turned to Tag to stimulate customers' creative cooking juices around its KV Nordic smoked salmon.

When customers scan the Tag on a KV Nordic package, they’re taken to a robust mobile site featuring smoked salmon recipes from two famous Italian chefs, Bobo and Chicco Cerea. The recipes are gorgeously presented with full-color photos. Customers can even email the recipes to friends directly from their mobile phone.



Finally, finding out more about your food is important, but what about making Tags edible? I'm sure you noticed the photo of oh-so-delicious cupcakes topped off with an edible chocolate Tag cookie. These Tags are scannable and take you to a video on ways to use Tags. The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating edible Tags.
