How the Petrone distillery in Italy is using Microsoft Tag.

Nocino Campano

You there, loitering indecisively in the liquor store. Whip out your phone and point it to this magic. Nocino Campano, a bitter nuts liqueur from Italy, is sporting a custom Tag on the back of its label, so while you’re waiting for your friend to text you back about rum versus vodka, you have something to entertain you.

The liqueur is made by the Petrone distillery, a 200-year-old family-run company in a little town called Mondragone that mainly makes limoncello. It’s the first distillery in Italy to try Tags. So far Nocino Campano is its only liqueur to get tagged, but Fabrizio Lapiello, an Italian gent who’s been working with the distillery to implement Tags, tells me they plan to use more. Currently, the Tag links to a product description and some historical info about the distillery, but they have plans to link to videos of the liqueur’s production as well as info about its ingredients.

We’ve talked before about Zero One Vintners and Bonterra winery using Tags on wine bottle labels, and Zonin Prosecco has used 2D barcodes in its ads. I think for a product that often leaves me squatting in the wine aisle of the grocery store, confusedly comparing label text, mobile tagging is a great way to give consumers more info and make them feel better about making a purchase.

What’s your take? Are there more ideas that'd make it easier to find a wine we like? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter.
