Local contest uses Microsoft Tag to promote businesses and provide financial tips.

Ever play Capture the Flag as a kid? If you live near Olympia, WA, you can play it as an adult – and potentially win some cool cash. O Bee Credit Union used Microsoft Tag 2D barcodes to create Capture the Tag, a fun way to promote local commerce and educate participants about finances, fraud, and saving money.

Players download the free Microsoft Tag app to their smartphones, then seek out and scan 30 Tags located at various businesses. Each Tag plays a video that provides clues to the location of the next Tag along with personal finance tips. Participating businesses can offer their own discounts and incentives, but no purchase is required. Co-sponsors offer clues and contest info on their sites, and players can interact on Capture the Tag Facebook and Twitter pages.

Contestants who collect all 30 Tags during the two-month promotion are invited to an end-of-contest Tag Party, where they are eligible for various prizes, including a first prize of $10,000.

“We want to engage and challenge Generation X and tech users to socially connect offline as well as online,” says Lee Wojnar, vice president of marketing for O Bee Credit Union. “In the process, they’ll get an introduction to some area businesses where they can become customers, they’ll get some personal finance lessons, and in the end, they’ll get a chance to come together at a great party, where they could win some very attractive prizes.”
