Let’s face it: life today is complicated. It used to be, for instance, that most people lived out their entire lives close to where they grew up. But today it couldn’t be more different. Entire families are spread all across the country, tethered together by the likes of Facebook, email or video chats. At the same time—especially in America—the population continues to age. Advances in medicine mean much of the population is living longer. The two trends have converged to present a challenging predicament for many families: how can children who live far away ensure their elderly parents receive the proper care?
A newly launched website, CareNotes Online hopes to solve this problem. The website is a place where caregivers can keep an ongoing log of how each of their clients is doing, in turn allowing family or friends to view it via a secure Internet connection from wherever they are and monitor their loved one’s care.
What’s more, CareNotes Online makes use of a Microsoft Tag to make the service extremely simple to use. The Tag replaces the cumbersome task of having to remember a user name and password every time you log in to check the care mom or dad received. Instead, subscribers to the service are sent a client ID card with a Tag on it. After downloading the Tag App to their smartphone, the family members scan the card’s Tag and up pops their parent’s care information.
“I can see that he had bath assistance, oral care, transfer to and from the bed, that the client requires full feeding, etc. I can see all that instantly and securely, right on my smartphone, regardless of the distance,” explains David Hickey, COO, LifeSaver App, LLC, the company behind CareNotes Online.
“What we’ve done is made it a short cut so that a client’s family can take a look at what’s been going on with their mom or their dad or whoever’s under care,” adds Marilyn Gard, the company’s president and founder. "When my mother-in-law was in hospice and we were separated by 2,800 miles and three time zones, I learned firsthand how difficult it is to communicate about the care of a loved one. Trying to connect to a caregiver at a convenient time was close to impossible with the difference in work schedules. CareNotes Online solves this problem by making the communication available 24-7.”
