Let’s hear it for the ladies

Recently, two mobile executives, Veronika Sonsev and Charlotte Fors, founded a non-profit called Women in Wireless that is “designed to help women in the mobile and digital media leverage their collective power to further advancement of women.” Besides coordinating events, educational series and conferences, the organization will launch a mentoring program next month to connect “successful women in the industry with emerging female leaders to build lasting relationships that will benefit them in their careers.” (Mobile Marketer)

Take me out to the ball game

The feel of a warm summer breeze, the sound of the crack of a bat, the taste of a hot dog and now the ease of a barcode. A partnership between the San Francisco Giants and eBay-owned ticketing website StubHub allows smartphone-savvy fans to buy tickets on the go and even the day of the game. The app uses mobile barcodes to give Bay Area ballpark goers the flexibility to purchase tickets anywhere at any time. StubHub also has plans to roll out this service for other events and venues in the future. (Mobile Commerce Daily)

Strike while the iron is hot

If you ever needed a sign that you should be getting into the mobile sphere, this might be it: according to new data, 38% of mobile phone users are using smartphones, which amounts to about 29% of the overall population. By the year 2015, though, 58% of mobile phone owners will have a smartphone, or nearly a whopping half of the entire population. (eMarketer)
