In Toronto, CA Walmart and Mattel have partnered in creating a pop up store where busy city dwellers can simply scan and purchase gifts for the holiday season. Located on the 17-mil PATH walkway, a connecting point for public transportation and numerous retail stores the QR Code pop up store should receive the amount of foot traffic to be successful. Jeff Tate, category marketing manager for hardlines and seasonal at Walmart Canada puts it simply “The virtual toy store provides us with a new way to serve time-starved customers and is a unique, interactive form of advertising.”
We’ll probably see a lot more activities like this come from brick and mortar retailers to engage mobile consumers. Especially after last holiday season where Amazon was paying shoppers $5 to walk out of stores empty handed if they purchased their items via their mobile devices.
