Save a Pet with Mobile Tagging

Welcome to our new weekly Microsoft Tag mockups. Each week, we’ll show different ways you can leverage mobile tagging. Today’s idea was inspired by a story posted in the Seattle Times, “Zeb, come home: Dog crosses 520 bridge in rush hour.”

Zeb, an Australian shepherd, ran away from his dog sitters. He lost his way and ran across the Hwy 520 bridge during rush hour. The frantic dog sitters contacted their friends and family through various social networks to spread the word that they were looking for the homeward-bound dog. Sure enough, various online communities responded and found Zeb.

“Both my husband and I are now firm believers in the power of social media,” says owner Megan Ferestien. “Without friends spreading the news through various networks and strangers responding to Craigslist postings, I don't know if we would have been able to narrow our search and bring him home.”

Animal shelters are full of pets waiting to find a home. The Tag mockup below uses mobile tagging powered by social media to help spread the word about these abandoned pets.

Tag-enabled name tags on shelter pet cages could enable workers, possible adopters, and volunteers to help save a pet using their mobile phones. When somebody scans the tag, information about the pet (Jack in this example) is shown on their mobile device.

The abandoned pet profile could be shared through social networks, email, and texting to find the loving animals a home. Mobile and social networking are powerful information tools, and leveraging this technology through mobile tagging could help save animals’ lives. If you’ve ever adopted a pet from a shelter, you know the feeling of whiching you could take them all home. With this concept, at least you can help save a pet without moving to a farm to keep them all.
