Welcome to Lloilo City, Philippines a town where barcodes can be scanned by smartphones and are a central part of the city's tourism efforts. The implementation of QR codes with the city's tourism campaign is a promotional plan to make the city more appealing to visitors who carry smartphones. According to the City Tourism Office, Benito Jimena the QR codes will provide smartphone users with information about a point of interest or "item". Select areas will sponsor QR codes including the city gallery, Calle Real, and Plaza Libertad Complex and are taking part of a QR code hunting contest which will include prizes.

Lloilo isn't the first city to use QR codes for tourism campaigns. Turin, Italy also hosted a campaign using Microsoft Tag as the QR code creator and scanning application. The Idaho Division of Tourism also took a trip with Tag when they sponsored an all inclusive trip for the Lumpkin family to see the states most popular tourist destinations.
