Five Reasons Not to be Afraid of Using Tag

When I tell people about how they can use Tag to easily expand their marketing to smartphones, I sometimes get a skeptical look like, “Well, yeah, you might try it, geek girl, but I’m not quite ready.” Much as I secretly smile at being thought of as “geek girl,” using Tag is far from a geeky undertaking.

Just in case you’re like some of my friends and a bit hesitant about trying Tag, I’d like to share what I’ve told them. Here’s how the five most common conversations go:


I say, “Hey, give Tag a try, it’s easy,” then my friend says:


  1. Yeah, but… no one will know what a Tag is or how to use it: Tag has been around for a couple years, and the 2D barcode has been around quite a while. Smartphone users are becoming highly aware of the kinds of experiences they can have by scanning a code. If you look around, you’ll notice more and more 2D barcodes and tons of creative Tag campaigns. And by following simple design guidelines, you can make sure even newbies can easily get started scanning your Tags with just a few simple steps.
  2. Yeah, but… I’ll do something wrong and it will break: Honestly, that’s pretty unlikely. Creating a Tag is incredibly easy, simply click a few links, choose a few options and then render your Tag image. Take a few more minutes and design a one-of-a-kind custom Tag. And you can quickly test it before your customer ever sees it, so there’s little risk of something breaking. Here’s everything you need to get started.
  3. Yeah, but… it’s expensive: This one’s easy: There’s no fee to create or scan basic Tags or to view basic reports – and these features will remain free even as the overall Tag capabilities grow over time. So you can get started with Tag and see if it’s right for your marketing efforts with no risk. And the technology is growing to fit your more sophisticated marketing requirements in the future, so starting now is a great way to get ready for what’s coming next.
  4. Yeah, but… it’s too ‘newfangled’: The concern here, I think, is that people won’t know how to use a Tag. I touched on that in the first point above. There’s more to this “newness” factor though, and it works in your favor. When you’re trying to rise above marketing noise, being seen as new and innovative is generally a good thing. Plus, colorful Tag images, especially custom Tags, catch your customer’s eye and make it clear you’re on the leading edge of finding ways to add insight and value to your product or service. And if you think the potential audience is a narrow demographic, just browse the Success Stories. From cruise lines to welding equipment manufacturers, you’ll find businesses using Tag with as wide a range of products and customer demographics as you could imagine.
  5. Yeah, but… it’s too complicated: Tags look so cool and new, it’s understandable you’d think they’re complicated. I thought so too at first. But they’re not. They’re easy to create and you don’t have to develop a fancy smartphone experience to use them. You can use Tags to do all kinds of things, like sending someone to a URL or dialing a phone number to your sales line. Maybe you’d like a simple Tag to add digital contact info to your business card. Just give it a try. You know, I can talk all day (really, I could) but the best way to see how easy it is to use Tag is to try it. Go for it, you just need a few minutes.
